This is one of the most problematic areas of the computer industry. Mainly because home users do not have their own personal IT professional at their disposal. In other words, they haven't called CompuAid. Granite, most home users understand the importance of keeping their PC secure. However, they don't know how to do it! How do you keep hackers, phisers, viruses, and just plain thieves out of my computer? Simple, get a good security program like McAfee or Norton and keep it updated. What you say! Simple again, just call CompuAid and your computer can be secured for as little as $ 70.00.

HOME PC SECURITY

Anti-virus is the most important piece of software you can have on your computer. With the increased popularity of the Internet came an increase in the popularity of viruses. Today's virus makers have become more sophisticated in there attacks. Don't think just because you don't open email attachments you won't get a virus. You can also get a virus from from visiting a website. Someone can break into your computer (hack) and place a virus or a trojan horse inside your computer. A trojan horse can steal your personal information, passwords, credit card, and even banking information.

The two most important programs are a Firewall and anti virus. Both can be free and safe. Zone Alarm and AVG.

Another important security issue is a firewall. Along with viruses a person (hacker) can gain control and steal your personal information. There are two basic types (platforms) of firewall's... hardware and software. Software includes packages like Norton Personal Firewall and Zone Alarm. Hardware includes devices such as gateway/routers. These devices are small (less than 6" x 12" x 2") and plugs in between your modem and your computer. Each type has its pros and cons and some work better than others.

Above I said "anti-virus is the most important piece of software..." but that has been changing in the past few years. Spyware is another way people can steal your personal information. Spyware typically installs on your computer from software you downloaded from the Internet. It is often packaged with "free" software. Spyware will often slow your computer down to a crawl.
